Virginia: Racist Graffiti Hits City
— Rocktown Weekly reports:
— “HARRISONBURG – Police are investigating a spate of racially charged graffiti that appeared in a neighborhood near downtown.”
— “Tags bearing ‘white power’ and ‘KKK’ were painted on telephone and utility poles and on steps in front of residences late Tuesday on East Wolfe Street, according to the Harrisonburg Police Department.”
— “Officers are trying to determine whether specific people were targeted, which could constitute a hate crime, said Mary-Hope Gangwer, spokeswoman for HPD.”
— “Around 10:45 p.m., a young white female was seen painting ‘KKK’ in front of a house near the 400 block of East Wolfe, said a neighbor who lives across the street from the house and asked to remain anonymous.”
— “Doug Mason, who is black and an anti-racism advocate, went to his sister’s house Wednesday morning and was shocked to see ‘KKK’ painted on a pole in front of her house.”
— “Mason said he and his sister are concerned for her safety following the vandalism.”
— “Mason said he grew up in the neighborhood after his family moved to East Wolfe in 1966.”
— “‘We never had that kind of intimidation,’ said Mason, who formed Sincere Citizens Against Racism, an anti-racism group. ‘It’s blatant.'”
— “He formed the group after a white co-worker at Massanutten Resort hung a noose on three separate occasions about 2½ years ago.”
