— “A small neighborhood in La Porte is outraged; residents say because recruiters for the Ku Klux Klan have been targeting them.”
— “Residents at the Fairmont Park Subdivision say KKK recruiters have been putting propaganda in their mailboxes in the form of a letter asking whites to join the group.”
— ” ‘I think it’s trying to break down a community,’ said John Holland, a local resident. ‘I don’t know who would be doing this
it leaves me speechless.’ ”
— “The letters apparently had been selectively hand-delivered without any postage to several homes. The Doughtys were among those left out, they say because they are black.”
— ” ‘They must know we live here,’ said Joseph Doughty. ‘I’m kind of scared because they may do something to us.’ ”
— “The letter states it’s from a local recruiter for the KKK. It attempts to explain that the KKK is a Christian group that believes the Bible is about the white race, not the Jews, and that Christ was not a Jew. It also expresses fear that the white race will become extinct, and that race mixing is a violation of God’s law. It says: ‘the future of our children and of our people depends solely on us.’ To join, you must be 100% white.”
— “It also urges people to act fast and join to ‘insure the preservation, protection and advancement of the white race.’ ‘Everyone who is out there doing this, I want to ask you all to stop,’ said Doughty. ‘We are human, just like you are human.’ ”
— “‘Get a life, turn your life over to God,’ said Holland. ‘Not hating people, but loving people.’ ”
— “We tried to contact the local KKK recruitment office, but that proved difficult since the letter and the website do not list a phone number; just a P.O. Box based out of Pasadena.”
— “USPS also says it will be conducting an investigation.”
